The prophetic words you received are given in the spirit and purpose of I Corinthians 14:3 to bring edification, encouragement and comfort. The basis of all that is done flows from a foundation of love (I Corinthians 13) and to edify Jesus' church (He who prophesies edifies the church; I Corinthians 14:4).
I Corinthians 14:3 "But everyone who prophesies speaks edification, encouragement and comfort to men."
Paul instructs us in I Thessalonians 5:19-21 to "Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test (examine) all things; hold on to the good." Those that have shared with you have learned to lean on the Lord's heart and listen to His voice for His sons and daughters. The reason that God calls upon you to test all things is that God has chosen that His 100% accurate, inspired, inerrant revelation (the only kind He can give), be delivered through imperfect people (the only kind of people there are). Thus, almost all New Testament prophesies experience some "imperfection" in the receiving, interpreting and delivering of the prophetic. God knows this and yet still commands us to not quench the Spirit by despising prophesies, rather to test them, holding on to what is good.
I Corinthians 13:9 " For we know in part and we prophesy in part."
I Corinthians 14:1 " Follow the way of love and eagerly desire (to minister) spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy."
We feel the best way to do this is to consider all revelation (prophecies) given first as "Invitations" not on par with the scriptures as to "Authority". It can become that to you through confirmations. Unless you know the prophetic word is contrary to scriptural teachings, we suggest you receive it as a personal love invitation from the Lord given specifically to you. Your spirit will identify with these words, and you will sense, "Yes, that's of the Lord" or "Yes, that's for me".
The prophetic words, impressions, pictures, phrases, scriptures, etc. given, may come to you as confirming words to things God has already revealed to your heart or they may simply come to you as "Words of Affirmation" that bring edification, encouragement or comfort. It is also common for prophetic words to be received as simply a message from God's heart for His son's and daughters that call us to something higher or deeper in Him.
While we should have an attitude of "open expectancy" related to the fulfillment of prophecy, just because a prophetic word is given does not mean that it will come to pass as per our expectations. The exact way that God brings about a word in our lives may be different than we envision when we first receive it. Here are some things to keep in mind when you have received prophetic words:
Philippians 4:6, 7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
